Arts and Culture in Detroit
Monday, December 19th, 2011Detroit Michigan has gone through tremendous changes in the last forty years. From the 1967 riots to the present challenges, it still is one of the most photogenic places anyone can ever visit, as well as the most culturally invigorating.
The Detroit Institute of Arts has been the ruby in the tiara of Detroit. It is the cultural mentor of the region. It has survived setback after setback and still manages to bring the world’s great exhibitions to the residents. At one time, it took all day to visit the place in its entirety due to city budget constraints. Anyone who spends the entire day will be awed over and over again. In the Great Hall, there are still those haunting suits of armor consciously guarding the treasures of this place. An earned favorite spot is the Mummy Room. Science, art, and “modernism” all in one place. The technology of mummification can excite anyone to build their own pyramid. The front of the DIA has been wonderful photo moments for weddings and great society cultural events. The steps and the fountain are just breathtaking. And it has its own red carpet.
The DIA is housed in the Cultural Center area in Detroit, home to the Detroit Public Library, the Historic Museum and Wayne State University as well as the Detroit Science Center. This area has become home once again to many art galleries and restaurants. Anyone wanting to be a “student of life”, this is a great locale to observe it. What better way to do it than with a camera and extra batteries.
