I prefer to draw a line between SEO and link-building. One (SEO) is on-page (on-site), the opposite, off-site (Linkbuilding). Good luck with your online makreting efforts in Google….

Using Free Publicity to Build Your Web Site Links and Traffic

Friday, June 5th, 2009

So, you have a great product or service, yet your web site is not getting the high rankings and traffic you desire from the top search engines like Google and MSN Search.

You’re not alone. This scenario is playing out all across the web, yet there is a simple solution to the problem. Publicity. Publicity is the art of gaining exposure for your web site, product, or service with press releases, articles, and other promotional methods.

A consistent publicity campaign can get you links from some of the best web sites on the Net. These links provide your web site with “Link Popularity” and the Google PageRank numbers you need for high search engine ranking and traffic. Plus, the links themselves can bring you a significant about of targeted traffic.

The Top 5 Tips for Getting Publicity (and Links)

Here are a few of my tips for getting publicity and links on the web sites, AND getting news stories and articles in the newspapers, magazines and Internet radio show sites.

TIP #1: Be Consistent – Stick With It For The Long-Haul

For maximum results, use public relations as a long-term awareness and link-building campaign. This will allow your messages to be delivered to the appropriate audience and generate visibility, traffic and sales for you.

The biggest mistake I see businesses making with publicity, is they’re not consistent at all, only sticking with it for 1, 2, or 3 months. It pays to be consistent is because sometimes you’ll send out a press release and get no response back, no publicity, nothing… In fact, this is when most people quit, when they should realize that publicity is a “numbers game” that generates exposure over the long-run if they would just stick with it.

Plus, if you know where to submit your articles and send your press releases, each one that you write can generate 3-20 or more new publicity hits and new links to your web site! So, send something to the media at least every month, if not every week or two. Stay on track by scheduling your articles and news releases on your marketing calendar.

TIP #2: Offer Great News Ideas and Quality Articles

To maximize your results, don’t send corporate “flack” to the media. “Flack” is blatant advertising disguised as a press release. Instead of wasting the media’s time, be their ally by sending them real news and quality articles that help their audience.

Don’t think you have enough time or ideas for writing articles and press releases? You probably already have the content for 12 press releases or articles without having to write a bunch of new content.

Where is this “hidden” content that’s already written? It’s the content on your web site, and in your white papers, and other marketing materials. Simply “repurpose” and edit this content into announcements, articles, press releases, tip sheets, and other publicity materials.

TIP #3: Expand Your Publicity Campaign By Building A Media List

In the publicity game, your greatest assets are your contacts. Since you know your ideal customer, you can target the web sites, media, and publications that your customers use to get their news and information. Your media list should consist of the following types of media…

  • Industry-specific web sites, and e-newsletters

  • Internet blogs, discussion forums and discussion lists

  • Article syndicators

  • Trade publications

  • Newspapers

  • Magazines

  • Radio & TV shows

TIP #4: Distribute Via E-Mail

A 2003 study by the Meta Group revealed that approximately 80% of business people say their e-mail is more valuable than the phone. This applies to media professionals as well, so send your press releases and articles via e-mail. E-mail is f*ree and easy to use, but adhere to these quidelines for e-mail press releases…

  • Introduce yourself via e-mail to the media professionals on your list and start building a relationship.

  • Use a compelling subject line that is personalized by including their first name.

  • Never ever send attachments

  • Be sure to format your e-mails in ASCII text file with hard returns at 65 characters. (Use Microsoft NotePad)

  • Following up via the telephone will greatly increase your results, but never ask “did you receive my press release?” (The media hate this question since they get hundreds of press releases a day!)

TIP #5: Post Your Articles On Your Web Site And E-Mail Newsletter

Content is King on the Internet, and the search engines love web sites with great niched content. Your articles and news releases are a perfect source of keyword rich text that’s tasty “spider food” for the search engine crawlers. So, post your articles and press releases on your web site to increase your search engine traffic.

But don’t stop there. Send them to your e-mail newsletter subscriber list, you never know who might be on your list who will love your article and link to it!

CONCLUSION:

As the great P.T. Barnum once said… “Without publicity a terrible thing happens… nothing!” Publicity is a great way to build your web site links, visibility, traffic and sales. Use these tips to maximize your publicity campaign’s success.

5 Tips For Increased Website Traffic

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

There are lots of ways to get traffic to your
website however most people are interested in getting
the most traffic for the least amount of money,
preferably for free.

While it’s difficult to get anything for free nowadays
there are still a few good ways to help build your web
traffic and still pay nothing.

1. Build a second content-rich website.

Because content is king on the internet many have
adopted the idea of building a content-rich site in
addition to their original sales site.

If you set up your title, description and keyword
tags carefully and find a good balance for your keyword
saturation, you may be better able to achieve high search
engine rankings with a site that contains only good content
and information.

Once you have built your content-rich site you can then use
the content to point your viewers to your sales site.

2. Add an article page to your existing site.

By adding article pages to your web site you can
once again point your readers to your sales page.

For example, let’s say you have a website that sells
vitamins. Set up a few article pages that reference
vitamins such as a page on the benefits of vitamins,
how to take vitamins, the effects of vitamins, etc.
Allow each of the articles to reference links to your
sales page.

This can be a very effective sales tactic because you’ve
attracted the attention of someone interested in your
topic. If they read your article and like what they’ve
read they’re more apt to check out your links and you’ve
increased your chances of making a sale.

Also, with proper meta tags and keyword usage, an article
page is much more likely to make it to the top of a search
engine listing than a sales page.

3. Submit your articles

Any articles that you write should be submitted to as
many sites that accept articles as possible. This is
important because sites that accept and include your
articles in their article banks establish links for
you and you are not obligated to reciprocate.

4. Build your links through reciprocal linking

By establishing reciprocal links you are verifying to the
search engines that you have credibility. If high ranking
sites link to your site then the search engines
will find you worthy of high ranking as well.

Find sites that rank well and request a link exchange.
This can be done manually or you can purchase linking
programs that will automate this for you. Either way
spend a few weeks focusing on creating quality links
and you will soon see your link ratings go up as well.

5. Join and participate in online forums.

The internet is full of discussion forums that cover
hundreds of business and non-business topics.

Find a forum in your topic and look over the discussions.
Ask questions, contribute your expertise and get to
know some of the forum members. This is an excellent
opportunity for you to meet others and introduct your
website. It also helps build trust while helping you
learn how others have found success.

Internet Marketing Strategy: The Write Way To Get Web Site Traffic

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

Since the birth of the commercial Internet good writing has driven the development and search engine positioning of web sites. Good web site content (next to keywords) has been and always will be the King, Queen and whole Royal Court of marketing success on the web.

When you’re trying to develop a successful web site you soon realize that your web site content is an important part of your success strategy. Web sites with great content are much more likely to get great traffic results than those which are filled with junk articles and lousy headlines.

The more interesting and diverse your content, the better traffic results you will have. However, when trying to get the right mixture of content, you may well become frustrated. This is especially true if you are not a strong writer. However the following tips/ strategies will help you appreciate the value of good web site content and the decisions you need to make to create the best content for your web site.

Care About The Content You Create/ Use.

Far to often web site owners give very little thought to the content on their web site. This happens much more frequently than one might expect with people who claim to be web professionals. However, without good content on your site the repercussions are immediate.

If you want better web site traffic results then make the creation of good content for your web site your priority. Whether you write the content yourself, or hire professional writers to develop this content for you it needs to be quality writing.

Someone who has passion for the subject should write this content. The more passionate the writer is about a topic, the better the writing will be. Usually, this is the web site owner and operator, because no one wants the site to succeed as much as this individual.

However, if you are not a great writer, you can always hire professionals to help you with this task. If your web site is a business then treat it as such and pay professionals to do the job right.

Always Use Quality Over Quantity.

When it comes to web site content there are some ‘dos’ and ‘don’t’ here.

When adding content to a specific section on your site set limits on the word count. A web site is NOT a novel. Web site content is mostly scan-read by your visitors who are searching for solutions to their problems, so make your content accessible to them.

Give them what they want… good information that’s easily digested (read) by the busy surfer. The easiest way to do this is mimic the structure of a newspaper article. The headline “pulls” you into reading the article, and the sub headers “pull” you into continuing reading a section within that article. If you scan read the article you should know what (in essence) it’s all about.

Content which is to long can drive viewers away because they are likely to get bored, and it’s just to much hard work to “digest’ the information that’s being presented to them. With the advent of multimedia technologies you can now very easily “mix it up” for the reader/ visitor as well.

Look at your site through the eyes of a potential visitor. Your purpose (with content) is to give the reader what they’re searching for as quickly and as efficiently as possible. When you write to entertain yourself or show how smart you are you will quickly lose your audience. Be direct, to the point and give you reader the core facts.

Good Content Flows Naturally.

The writing style of the web is “conversational”. This is good news for the person who is not a natural writer. If you have difficulty writing then don’t… TALK into a tape recorder. Then, transpose what you’ve just spoken into words.

Natural flowing web content is like a good conversation. It flows back and forth between the parties involved in the conversation. When you’re writing your content THINK of the visitor and speak to them personally. If you adopt this technique as a writing strategy then your writing with naturally flow, and it will have “you” in it.

This strategy will help you develop content that is more natural. You see, in a faceless place (like the Internet) we Human Beings will always respond more positively to information which has the personality of you (the writer) in it.

And (guess what) you’re the only person who can write ‘you’ . So, if a piece feels unnatural to you when it’s being written (it’s not you) then most likely it will look uncomfortable to the reader on your web site as well.

Proofread Before You Publish.

This is just about being a professional. You are a professional, aren’t you?

Some of the most unnecessary mistakes made with web site content writing are grammatical. Please, please, please (and please again) run spell check before you publish.

Web site content with spelling and basic grammar mistakes just make you look ridiculous, and are completely unacceptable. If you want your site to be taken seriously then proofread your articles numerous times before you publish them.

Proofreading ensures that you are delivering information that is intelligent and complete. It may help you to read your text out loud, in order to hear what it actually sounds like. Although it may seem unnecessary for you to do this you will find that the response to your work will be much better when there are no mistakes in it.

And, here’s something else for you to think about, “If the greatest writers in the world need to work with Editors/ proofreaders why would you expect to be different?”

As you can see there are a number of important aspects involved in the development of good web site content. Focus on your passion, deliver quality, and be concerned about the flow of your content. Of course if you would prefer to not worry about these matters then hiring a professional writer is always the way to go here.

However, if you are up to the challenge then try writing your own content. All you need do is just relax and begin writing. And, here’s a writer’s trick to get the creative juices flowing. Before you attempt to write any article just write about anything for 10 straight minutes. This technique calms down the inner critic long enough for you to actually write.

Let the content come to you without effort. Try different approaches with your writing and you will quickly learn what works best for you, your site and the content that your visitors are interested in reading. As long as it feels right to you when you read it on the site it will most likely work for your web site visitors too.

When I was a professional musician I asked my drum teacher one day “When will I be a drummer?” He said “Do you have a drum kit?” I said, “Yes, I have a drum kit.” He replied, “Well, that makes you a drummer. However, it doesn’t make you a good one. So keep practicing”. My point here is this, “keep practicing and you too will become (in this case) a great web site content writer”.
