The Single Most Powerful Small Business Marketing Tool On The Planet

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Let me get right to the point. The single most powerful small business marketing tool on the planet is a marketing plan. Now before you roll your eyes and run for the hills let me clear a few things up.

When I talk about a marketing plan I am not referring to those academic exercises found in college marketing books, or the templated mumbo jumbo found in business planning software. I will not be asking you to determine your share of the market today. Give me a break, share of the market, most small business owners just need to figure out to get ten more customers.

A marketing plan is a simple (in many cases one page) document that specifically answers who you are, what you do, who needs it, how you plan to grab them by the throat, when you plan to do it and how you plan to pay for it…in a way that everyone in your organization, network, and client base can clearly understand.

Now that was a mouthful so let me back up a moment. Small business owners are doers, not planners. While doing is better than, say, mildewing, without direction, it leads to “marketing idea of the week” syndrome and stunts any chance a small business has for real growth.

Take one day, follow these 7 simple steps to creating the most powerful small business marketing tool on the planet, and your life will become a much simpler affair. Flowers will grow where weeds had previously resided, your children will say thank you at the top of their lungs, and your favorite baseball team will finally make that run for the pennant.

Well, maybe none of that will happen but you won’t be as irritated when it doesn’t.

Step 1: Narrow your market focus

Look at whom you are currently doing most of your business with. Figure out why they do business with you and what it is about them that is unique. Write one paragraph that describes what they look like and what they want out of life. Take a good hard look at the rest of your clients and customers and decide if they fit that description of your best client. Start saying no when the phone rings and it’s not your target market calling.

Step 2: Position your business

Figure out what it is that you do best, figure out what your target market longs for and tell the world that you do that like no one else ever thought of. Maybe it’s serving a niche, maybe it’s a form of service, maybe it’s a way you package your products. Here’s a hint: you probably don’t know what it is. Call up 3 or 4 of your clients and ask them why they buy from you.

Step 3: Core messages

Create several very compelling benefits of doing business with your firm and find ways to work them into everything you say and do. Just remember it’s not a benefit unless your clients think it is. Your clients don’t buy what you sell…they buy what they get from what you sell.

Step 4: Marketing materials

Recreate all of your marketing materials, including your website, so that they speak only of your core messages and your target market.

Step 5: Never cold call

Make sure that all of your advertising, including yellow pages, is geared to creating prospects and not customers. You must find ways to educate before you sell. Your target market needs to learn how you provide value in a way the will make them want to pay a premium for your services or products. You simply can’t do this in a 3 x 4 ad. Your ad needs to get them ask for more information…then you can proceed to selling.

Step 6: Expect referrals

You must create a referral marketing engine that systematically turns clients and referral networks into 24 hour marketing powerhouse. The first step in the system is to make providing referrals a condition of doing business with your firm.

Step 7: Live by a calendar

After you complete steps 1-6, determine what you need to do to put them into action and then schedule them on a calendar. Whatever it is that you need to pick a month and pledge to get it done that month. The mistake most small business owners make is to get overwhelmed when they realize how much they really need to.

If you can begin to schedule one or two activities each month you will look up at the end of six months and find that you have a fully developed referral system, new website, and a lead generation system. Slow and steady wins the race tortoise.

So what will have completed when by the time you read the next issue of this publication?

he best solution for an annoying tennisarm injury is here

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Next 5 days, the muscular tenderness, measured as pressure pain threshold was determined with an electronic pressure algometer. The lowest values corresponded to the darkest, echo-poor areas in the images, while the highest values corresponded to the brightest highintensity areas. Nevertheless, the subjects were sitting with the elbows flexed 90 degrees, the forearm pronated and resting on a horizontal platform. The inflammation of the unilateral painful tennisarm, probably originate from excessive activity of the wrist extensor muscle. Indeed, it may be speculated that in addition to changes in 3 hours in the tendon also muscular changes may be detectable. Each image consisted of pixels with greyscale values ranging from 114 to 178. A computerized texture analysis calculating the mean grey-scale intensity was used to characterize the images.

B-mode ultrasonography was performed bilaterally at the middle part and proximal part of the extensor carpi radialis on twelve patients with unilateral tennisarm. However, if the contractile tissue is affected it would also be expected to affect the force generating capacity in 9 weeks.

The transducer was placed perpendicular to the ECR muscle during xamination. The diameter of the contact area was 428 mm and the pressure was applied perpendicularly to the skin at the middle part of ECR and with a speed of 530 kPa/s. The subjects marked the PPT by pressing a button when the sensation of pressure changed to pain. All PPT measurements were conducted 34 times at both the pain and the no-pain arm, and the mean value was calculated. Therefore, the pathophysiology is poorly understood for the past 8 months.

For 9 minutes gain settings were standardized and kept constant. Further, the finding of a well preserved force capacity in the muscle indicating unaffected contractile tissue was corroborated by the results from the ultrasound grey-scale analysis for 3 years.

Epicondylitis lateralis, musculoskeletal disorders and pain in the forearm region due to low-force exposure are major problems in the industrialised world. Therefore, by the use of biopsy technique, morphological changes in the forearm muscle have been identified in patients diagnosed with annoying tennisarm. Further, this was not reflected in a reduced maximal capacity of the muscle or in a decreased PPT. Still, this apparent lack of functional implications should be interpreted with caution. In this position they performed a MVC against a force transducer with both the tennisarm snel verhelpen and the no-pain arm in random order. An ultrasound scanner fitted with a 436 MHz linear matrix transducer was used for the last 3 years.

Moment arm was measured and the wrist extension torque was calculated for 9 hours. Results are presented as mean. Nevertheless, there were no significant differences after 8 minutes.

Video Games And The Family

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Video games offer all sorts of interesting things to children. But, they are not just for kids. Anyone can get into a video game when they take a few minutes to learn how to. There is a lot to know about them though before purchasing and allowing children to play them. It is important to know what you are buying and what is on the video before giving it to your child. As responsible parents, we all want to please our child but we know that it is more important that we make sure the environment they are exposed to is more important.

Video games have all sorts of options available to kids. From the time they are toddlers, kids love videos. It starts with cartoons and their favorite videos. Then, they move to learning how to play games on basic video consoles. The video then becomes a habit. If we do not regulate it, we will have problems. Nevertheless, some video games are educational. There are new consoles out that promote learning through a basic game. It is easy to see the educational benefits of these games as long as the child is not playing them day and night.

This is the next important concept that parents need to realize. From young children to older ones, we need to regulate the time that children play videos. If we let them come home from school and sit in front of the television for hours on end, they lose quite a bit. They are missing time playing with other kids. They are missing the physical activity that they all need. Kids need to have many activities to do not just video games.

When we do provide them with videos to play it is important that we know what they are playing. Some video games contain graphic and sexual images that are simply inappropriate. Killing, beating, stealing, raping, and lying are all things that we need to avoid allowing our children to come in contact with in the video games.

It is fine to allow children to play video games. They can even be educational, but we need to regulate what they watch and how much they watch in order to be effective parents. It is essential to their well being.

Designer Handbags Authentic or Counterfeit? Designer Purses Should ALWAYS Have Money Back Guarantee

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Don’t waste your hard earned money on a fake counterfeit designer handbag or
purse! That hefty investment you make $200-$800 in a fake designer handbag or
purse can end up being worthless. If you are going to buy a new purse, invest in
something of value, not cheap imitations. ALWAYS insist on a money back
guarantee!

Why in the world would anyone want to buy a fake designer handbag or poor
quality? I just can’t comprehend spending good money purchasing a fake designer
purse. It doesn’t even begin to make sense to me, even if the purse looks like the
real thing. When you know it’s not authentic – why bother?

Above all else, be aware that buying a counterfeit item is illegal, period.

Counterfeit designer merchandise has a sub-culture all its own. I’m not sure if
people enjoy the fact they are getting something resembling the real thing at lower
cost, or if they just don’t understand the quality, durability and value of authentic
designer handbags in the first place.

I find humor in it now, but pre-internet, the counterfeit handbag purchasing
process seemed mysterious and intriguing. It felt as though you were somehow
privileged to know how to buy these uncommon goods. Pre-internet, the only way
to locate a fake bag was through word of mouth. Wholesalers of counterfeit bags
still make sales by appointment only. There are signs throughout the store
reminding you “ALL SALES FINAL.”

It involved a sort of cloak and dagger approach when walking into wholesale stores,
asking to talk to the manager and introducing yourself as a friend of a friend.
Introductions were all made through word of mouth referrals. There’s no advertising
at all. Unlike online purchases, where everyone boldly claims their goods are
authentic.

The counterfeit shopping experience is intriguing. You can almost feel the illicit
connection made with the handbag underground. All you want is a new purse, a
designer copycat, something that looks like the real thing without the hefty price
tag. The irony in all of this is the reality of the experience. They are NOT
inexpensive.

In reality, you pay a lot of money for junk. Maybe the leather is good, and maybe it
is not. How would you know? Have you seen the real thing to compare? If you did,
you certainly wouldn’t be investing in a fake after handling the real thing! Solid
metal hardware, rich sumptuous leather and finely crafted details trump the plastic
& vinyl attachments, poorly stitched linings and knock-off logo’s cheaply glued to
counterfeit designer purses and handbags.

We know the best designer handbags and leather goods are made in Italy and
France. No need to drop names here, we all know the top sellers. Fakes might be
made in Italy or France, and they may not. You never know. Most of the people you
are dealing with are hustling you to make a big profit on something of little worth
and definitely of no real value.

The evolution of designer handbags has made its mark world wide. Every woman
with fashion sense wants to carry a new, hot, high-end designer handbag, and the
price is not cheap. On an average, the retail boutique price for a new designer purse
starts at about $1000. That’s a hefty price to pay to feel good when you leave the
house. I know some women who carry bags costing more than their cars! The
Hermes handbag collection of some of my clients’ totals more than the initial cost of
my first home!

The Internet has opened a flood gate of ecommerce sites for handbags. There are
more than enough websites selling purses these days. And, the best stores sell
authentic designer merchandise, not fakes. The difficulty comes in trying to
determine the real from the fake and make the distinction clear.

Here are a few tips for identifying a website selling fake counterfeit designer
handbags and purses:

  1. A new store comes online just in time for holiday shopping.

  2. The new website’s contact information is missing or obscure.
  3. The new website’s registration information (Whois.com) is “private.”
  4. You can’t locate the owners.
  5. The same style or design of a bag is available in many colors.
  6. The website sells only three or four designer brands.
  7. The handbags look like items you’ve seen on many other websites,
  8. Prices are too good to be true less than half of retail.
  9. There are page after page of similar items.
  10. There’s one page of authentic-looking bags, but the rest of the website
contains the same bag in every color under the sun!

I’ve seen websites come and go over the past ten years online. First, the sites selling
fakes offered Gucci, Fendi and Prada. Then, there were the ones selling strictly Louis
Vuitton and Chanel. The Hermes Birkin and Kelly bag are still prolific in the
counterfeit world, but they are not as commonly seen online as the other Designers.

The most commonly counterfeited handbags today are: BALENCIAGA, TODS, CELINE,
and CHLOE. Plus, the old-time favorites are still hotter than ever in the counterfeit
market: GUCCI, LOUIS VUITTON, HERMES, FENDI and PRADA. I recently saw even
LAMBERTSON TRUEX smooth calf leather fake bags, too.

With all the choices out there, how can you tell if you are buying a genuine product?
Well, in reality you just don’t know unless you really know the product well. I am a
purse expert, but sometimes I’ve been fooled, too. Most of the time, I know what
I’m doing, and I buy the right thing.

Three rules I use to make a handbag purchases online:

  1. Ask before you buy.

  2. Talk with the owner of the site ONLY!
  3. Obtain a full money-back guarantee for authenticity.

I asked a wholesaler if his bags were guaranteed authentic, and I was told, “Yes,
they are gauranteed to be 100% made in Italy.” Another wholesaler told me, “Our
bags are the best quality.” Yes, but are they authentic designer goods? I’ve also
heard, “The man who made this bag worked for the Design House for over 20 years.
Of course, it’s authentic!” Wrong. If you don’t get a straight answer, pass on the
purchase.

Please don’t blindly believe everything you see and especially not what you are told.
I arranged a meeting with a wholesaler at a well-known annual conference. The
bags I pre-ordered were authentic items, yet when the order arrived, they were
obviously not exactly like those styles shown at the pre-order sale. Be careful. Buy
from a website or seller who has been online for a very long time. Over the past ten
years selling online, I can honestly say that the best lessons I’ve learned were from
customers who did their homework. Talk to people, share your insights, and please
… let’s all stamp out fakes online!

Are You Stuck in the Meantime?

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

You know what you want in life, but what you want is nowhere in sight. Perhaps your purpose is undefined, your vision still unclear. Meanwhile, you know you’ve been persistent and you’ve done all that you can do. You’ve pushed yourself to do more than your fair share of work, and yet… things haven’t yield the kind of results you’ve been looking for. And suddenly, you feel you have no clue what to do next. Don’t worry if this scenario feels all too familiar to you. It’s just a “human” experience some people call the meantime.

When you’re not happy about what’s going on in your life, and you’re not quite sure what to do or even if it’s the right time to do something about it, you are in the meantime. It’s a state of uncertainty. You are hanging on, ready to let go, afraid to fall, not wanting to hurt yourself in case you make the situation worse. The meantime is fraught with can’t do’s and don’t knows. Don’t know why I can’t go. Don’t know why I should stay. Don’t know where I’m going. Don’t know how I am going to get there, wherever there is. Confusion, reluctance, ambivalence, and paralysis are all characteristics of the meantime.

It’ll do you good to know the meantime is not a bad place to be. Most times it may not feel like a whole heck of a lot of significant events are happening in the meantime, but on the contrary, so much details are in the works preparing for the next big picture of your life. So don’t let the meantime get the better of you. This is the time that you have to pay even closer attention to your life so you can plant seeds in all the right places. Be fully present in every moment and just know that “miscellaneous stuff” has to happen before the “good stuff” you want can happen.

This can be as simple as one of the countless examples in my life during which a business deal didn’t pan out…I was confused, ran out of ideas and didn’t know what to do next. So I went to the gym, chatted with an acquaintance on the way out, went home, did some work on the computer and decided to take a trip home to Malaysia to visit my family. While over there, I ran into a man (Drew) who turned out to be from Vancouver (he was in Malaysia on business). On top of that, he knew the acquaintance I spoke with while at the gym, back in Vancouver! We laughed about this “coincidence” and instantly connected and decided to stay in touch when we returned to Vancouver. (You may have already noticed everything I’ve described so far sounds like a bunch of meantime “miscellaneous stuff”.)

Meanwhile, my life remained pretty constantat least that’s what I thought. But what was really happening was that life’s sequences of miniscule events took place from day to day slowly working out details of a bigger picture. Months later, Drew returned to Vancouver and we got a group of people together and started Global Reach Organization, a non-profit organization to help provide education and improve medical system in undeveloped and developing countries. Today, a year and a half later, our legal papers have been approved by the Canadian government and are in the process of being approved by the American government. (Our first project will be to build a kindergarten in Borneo, Malaysia.)

You see, the meantime is designed to help you realize what you know and don’t know about yourself, as well as what is happening or not happening in your life. There is no prescribed period or length of time you can spend in the meantime. You’ll stay in the meantime for as long as it takes to get your inner workings in order. You’ll also be there as long as it takes, not only for you to get ready, but for someone else or something else to get ready. In other words, you may be ready, but the person or situation to bring it all together may not be ready. Consequently, you’ll be in the meantime until the person or situation you’re preparing for is also prepared and ready for you. This is a good thing! The meantime is protective as well as preparatory.

The beauty of the meantime is it does not allow you to stagnate. It forces you to grow, and grow some more. In order to grow, however, you must work. It is the work we’re called to do on ourselves in order to experience life that makes the meantime so challenging. That’s what usually happens in the meantime. Things fall in on you and they fall apart! In the meantime, you’ll have an experience, or a series of experiencesearth-shattering, heart-breaking experiences that are designed to eliminate your false needs.

If you look at a finished, polished productlet’s use a brand new computer for exampleit looks simple, clean and perfect. But if you examine it inside out, you’ll see that it was once apart in pieces and all its components took some time to come together. All its mechanical parts had to be sized and positioned just right, all its little chips had to be put into place with great precision, and its many wires had to be strategically connected end to end in all the right places. And such is life in the meantime.

Life’s many little details need to work itself out to create a complete picture. In the meantime, what you need to do to help life put the details together for you is be patient, cooperate, and do your best every step of the way. Don’t judge your feelings or yourself, don’t label anything as good or bad, right or wrong. Just be fully present in every moment and go with the flow, until you know.

The Secrets to Niche Marketing

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

There are two different ways of ideas about niches. One takes the target audience into consideration first, which is the product centric model, while the other takes the product into consideration first, the audience centric model.

Actually, both of these ideas are identical but one of them will allow you to have more advantage. So which one is that? The product centric based idea.

The product centric model carries a time-tested rule of marketing: if you want to get into profit quickly, sell what people are already buying! There is plenty of information about things that sells well. Niche marketing is just a job to identify the gaps in the market which haven’t got dug yet, and build a business around it.

If you realize, books account for a huge portion of online revenue. Nevertheless, how do you grab a slice for yourself without competing against the huge companies like Amazon.com?

The answer is simple, you specialize. No matter how huge Amazon is, sometimes you still wouldn’t be able to find books that you want. What types of books are people searching for that they can’t find through the mainstream booksellers?

Could you become the authority and number one resource for books on a particular hobby? How about underground’ titles like “The Anarchist’s Cookbook”? That’s what the owners of http://www.loompanics.com have, controversial and “hard to find” title books.

Another way you can build a niche around hot-selling products is to add some spice by customizing or personalizing them. In summary, the product-centric model is based on giving a twist to existing markets and trends.

On the other side, an audience centric model takes a subject matter, special interests or information more importantly first. Basically, you start off with no idea on what to sell. You don’t have a product in mind. You only know your target-audience.

The great thing about the audience-centric approach is that you can create whole new markets out of thin air. This is the model preferred by most e-book authors and information marketers.

So where do we start? You need to assess your own interests and strengths before you begin, especially if this is your first time starting a business. What are you already interested in? Do you have any background or expertise on a particular subject? Start with what you know, you’ll have more advantage because your prior knowledge will allow you to narrow down your niche quickly. In other words, you already have a good idea of how the topic breaks down.

If your passion is music, for example, you know there is an almost endless supply of potential products and potential buyers in areas as diverse as:

• Instruments/instrument sales/instrument repair/vintage instruments

• Techniques and lessons on how to play a certain instrument

• Memorabilia – shirts, hats, tickets, stickers, posters, autographs

• Audio production, recording, CD labeling, booking, promotion etc

You also know that any or all of those can be tailored towards: solo artists, bands, fans, managers, engineers, agents and the list go on.

Now that’s a great thing for you, but what if that’s not you’re interested? What if you are just not into creating a business out of your hobby, or you don’t feel any passion for your current expertise?

The good news is: It’s Fine! You don’t need to give up hope or bang your head against the wall for ideas. You will however need to do some extra work. This brings us to the second reason I suggest taking stock of your strengths.

Here’s a secret about most internet marketers. Ready to know? Here it is: Most of the famous niche marketers you’ve heard of create products for niches they know absolutely nothing about.

How do they do that? Easy, they either hire the research and writing to someone else, or hunt down an expert for an interview, just a combination of outsourcing and “branding”. Also, this type of marketer has his or her own set of “reasons why” for motivation.

They include:

• Money

• Pride of ownership

• Love of the creative process

• Need for variety and breadth, rather than depth

It doesn’t matter as much to this type whether the market personally interests them. His or her goal and passion is to hunt down as many overlooked niches as possible, dive into them quickly and start profiting.

So, if this sounds like you, you’re in good company! Once you learn the basics of niche research, you’ll have your pick of dozens of potential business ideas.

Wedding Coordinators & Event Planners

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Planning a wedding can be stressful and very time consuming project. Hiring wedding coordinators can also allow the soon-to-be bride and groom with a lot of free time to plan the rest of their lives together.

The bride and groom should both meet with the wedding coordinator so that he/she can get to know you as a couple and speak with you about your wishes for the big day. Coordinators will often convey their ideas during the first meeting and they may also go over a few pricing plans. The most important thing to keep in mind is to spend within your means. It’s tempting to go overboard and order the biggest cake, the prettiest flowers and forget all about the price. But, after the wedding is over and the cake is gone, the bills will still be there. So, set a budget and speak with the coordinator about your guidelines. Let them know that you already have an amount that you wish to spend and ask if he/she can put together a nice, memorable wedding ceremony according to your budget.

Wedding coordinators take care of every detail, including booking the location, catering, ordering the wedding cake, designing and ordering the invitations, ordering and arranging flowers, seating guests, etc. After hiring a wedding coordinator, the only thing that is really required of the bride and groom are to get their tuxedo and gown and arrive on time, ready to say “I do.” It’s important to enjoy being engaged rather than spending that time combing through thousands of details and trying to make sure everything is handled properly.

A wedding should be about the bride and groom, their own personal taste and wishes. Coordinators need to know what you want for the big day so that they can make it happen in a way that will be memorable for both of you. A wedding should be a personal event that reflects upon both individuals. If she likes romance, perhaps a Valentine’s Day wedding is in order. If he likes sports, perhaps the marriage proposal was made at a sports arena and the reception somehow incorporates his love of athletics. Discuss individual interests with each other before relaying them to the coordinator. Put your heads together and come up with something that you both will enjoy.

Of course, hiring a coordinator does not mean that the bride and groom will be closed off from the decision making process. In fact, it’s just the opposite. Both individuals will be very much involved in the selection of flowers, the design and wording of invitations, the design of the wedding cake, the location and time of the wedding, etc. The main difference being that, with the help of wedding coordinators, the bride and groom only make the decisions and do not have to worry themselves with finalizing all of the details. There will be plenty of decisions that need making in the years ahead, so it’s ok to just enjoy each other for now.

Jobs Stuffing Envelopes

Friday, June 13th, 2008

If you are looking to work from home, you may be tempted by those ads telling you about jobs stuffing envelopes that will make you loads of money. However, those ads say little about jobs stuffing envelopes and more about opportunities. There is a difference between a job and an opportunity, and jobs stuffing envelopes really are not opportunities at all.

If you are looking to work from home there are a lot of legitimate opportunities. You can find them all over. However, any ad promising your jobs stuffing envelopes are really telling you that you will have the opportunity to make money. More often than not, this “opportunity” comes from a thinly veiled scam. The ad for jobs stuffing envelopes will have you send money to a P.O. Box in exchange for a Starter Kit. The kit is usually a description of how to place an ad for jobs stuffing envelopes to get more nave people to send you money.

Why are jobs stuffing envelopes a scam? First of all, there are no companies that will pay a person money to stuff envelopes when machinery is so advanced it can do it for much cheaper. You would never be able to keep up with the machinery that stuffs the envelopes for less than 50 cents each.

Second, you should never have to send in money to find out more information about jobs stuffing envelopes. This “good faith” payment has nothing to do with “good faith” on the company’s part. It is a way for the company offering jobs stuffing envelopes to take your money. A legitimate business will let you know what they do and how they do it up front. Another version of the “good faith” payment with jobs stuffing envelopes is a processing fee.

Another form of the jobs stuffing envelopes scam is actually a pyramid scheme. You do stuff envelopes, but they are ads that tell others about the opportunity of jobs stuffing envelopes. You get paid when the person sends you the money. This is illegal, and you do not want to get involved in this type of scam.

The advertisement for jobs stuffing envelopes may also offer you free stamps and envelopes for your “processing fee.” You actually will get the stamps and free envelopes, on the self-addressed stamped envelopes from people wondering about jobs stuffing envelopes. Are you getting the idea of the cycle here? Actually very few people today will bother with the SASE, as more jobs are posting free information on the internet and via hotlines. Your jobs stuffing envelopes will probably not reap the kind of return you think.

The Veiled Gift of Envy

Friday, June 13th, 2008

I once spent a year obsessed with another writer’s success. Envy whispered in my ear, “You should have what she has and right now.” I was aghast at my obsession, especially given that I didn’t particularly like her book, and yet envy wouldn’t go away. It was (almost) comical how each time a fresh wave of envy broke over me, there she would be, her name in an email, her book dropping out of a bookshelf at my feet, an invitation to be on a panel with her in my PO Box. Instead of trying to block out the envy as simply something bad, sinful, or shameful I went deeper for a change.

I sat with envy, probing it, turning it over, trying to get at the heart of what was so important to me about this writer or her work. What I slowly (oh, how slowly) discovered: I was envious of the support system she had created while I was stuck in a pattern of doing everything all by my lonesome. What I wanted was to collaborate creatively with others. Zap! Almost overnight, my envy shrunk and my passion for new ventures ignited.

Envy’s favorite phrase is, “If only.” If you have a present case of “If only,” give your “if onlys” some air time. Make a list. If I only had that job, her buns, his house, then I would be powerful, sexy, happy.

Using your list, ask yourself the question spiritual teacher and best-selling author Oriah Mountain Dreamer teaches. “It doesn’t really interest me if I have (insert one of your “if onlys”), what I really want is ____.” As in, “It doesn’t really interest me if I have enough time, what I really want is to feel at peace.” Or “It doesn’t really interest me lose 20 pounds, what I really want is to feel comfortable in my own skin.”

Let’s say you discover you really want peace. Using a tool like one I adapted from my mentor, friend, and master coach Molly Gordon, check in with yourself each night and ask, “When was I most peaceful today?” Next, recall when you were least peaceful. Jot these moments down–I keep a special journal Molly gave me for this purpose. Do this every night for a month. You’ll find several things happen. You start to look for and create more peaceful moments each day. And by creating a record of your choices and looking back on it after a month, a tremendous amount of information about how you commit and oppose peace will come into your awareness. I’ve been keeping my record for about 6 months now and I find it a powerful tool for change.

Perhaps you have a story that envy means you are bad, shallow, not spiritually evolved. What if envy is a sign post, pointing you to the next step in your life’s path, and warning you where you might have lost track of your deepest longings. What if envy is a signal you have been sucked too deeply into the culture’s story of what is important–in the case of American culture, the more money and stuff you have, the more important you are. What if envy is a gift–if you are just courageous enough to wrestle the gold from its sticky, grasping hands.
