Build an Effective Team Today

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

A team is not just a group of people. All too often a group of individuals are put together in a room with a common task and expected to accomplish a goal efficiently and effectively. This is something that is harder to accomplish than you might think. To get a task done as a group the group will have to work together as a team and that is something that takes time to develop and practice to achieve.

A good team will have a handful of qualities that we will cover right now. Without such qualities a team is only a team by title not by ability to perform as one. The members of a team must be intertwined by purpose and task. If they are independent of one another there is a large piece of the team concept missing. The team must have a well defined leader that is skilled in dealing with team members and has a team mentality. The group must have members that are all willing and able to participate in the team goals.

Communication must be open and clear between the leader and the embers and between the members. All of the team members must have their own roles and know what their roles are and what all other members’ roles are. The team has a way to solve problems that come up while still keeping strong interpersonal relationships and unbroken. A good team must be able to think outside the box and be creative with regard to how to complete tasks together. Lastly, all members have a say in how the team operates and what the team completes.

The more the group works at becoming a team the more likely they will actually become a close knit and cohesive unit. Though there is cost and effort involved the rewards far out way the costs.

C. S. Lewis: Prince Caspian

Friday, June 27th, 2008

If you recently watched the very popular Disney movie “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, you might be aware that C. S. Lewis wrote a total of seven books about Narnia. These are, in order of the internal chronology of events:

1 – The Magician’s Nephew
2 – The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
3- The Horse and His Boy
4 – Prince Caspian
5 – The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
6 – The Silver Chair
7 – The Last Battle

The novel “Prince Caspian” begins one year after the events told in “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” on a railroad platform where Peter, Edmund, Susan and Lucy are waiting for trains that will take them to their boarding schools. Suddenly they feel themselves transported into another world, and after a few hours of wandering about they realize that it is Narnia, where many centuries have passed in the meantime.

The second plot line involves young Prince Caspian, heir to the throne of Narnia, who has to flee from his usurping uncle Miraz. Deep in a forest he discovers some of the “Old Narnians” – talking beasts and dwarfs – and later decides to challenge his uncle for the kingship.

Soon, though, the military situation deteriorates for Caspian and his small army, and they end up besieged on Aslan’s How, a hill built over the site of the stone table that played a crucial role in “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”. When things look utterly bleak, Caspian uses his most precious object, Queen Susan’s Horn, to summon help.

This review does not try to give away too much more of the plot and spoil the reader’s enjoyment, so let me just say that the two plot lines intertwine, there are thrilling battle scenes (including a duel) and a wonderful celebration at the end.

Lewis does a good job of showing the gradual re-transformation of the four children, who once again turn from being English schoolchildren to becoming Kings and Queens of Narnia.

To me, “Prince Caspian” is one of the three best books in the Narnia series, together with “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” and “The Magician’s Nephew”. In many ways, it repeats themes from “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, but adds an interesting perspective by having the events of the earlier book become the stuff of legend.

The Popular Notebook Trends At The Moment

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Move over PC, it’s the time of the laptop computer, or at least that what the big demand implies. But take note if you want the most up to date tech than you need to come up with some patience as there could be part shortages. Laptop computers have just been an amazing business to follow. There has been no drop in shipments. The technology is evolving in all directions at once as well.

I’ve witnessed a lot of gaming laptops being launched as of late. I think gaming laptops have never been at such low prices. You can hunt down some really good offers out there that will get you playing games. In my opinion laptops are reasonably good for gaming. Processing power is much better than before. Even more suprising these days I think is how slick the designs are becoming especially when you think about much performance is in them. With that said gaming laptops should never be cosidered in the same league as their PC rivals. There will be a gap and the emphasis here is that its not a major factor for most. The development of gaming laptops suggest that they will get slicker and weightless in the future.

I think we’re seeing an increased amount of start-up business exclusively peddling custom built laptops. Usually well known components go into these laptops. With that in mind you traditionally get to specify the cpu, memory, storage and operating system. Notebook computers distributed in retail are normally made for the mass market and perhaps this isn’t you. You get around this by aquiring a laptop built to . You can find of manufacturers who supply direct so there are a lot of alternatives too. I actually think this is a major thing that goes in favour for purchasing a laptop thats made to .

The next notebook technology will be exciting. The prevailing trend along with those mentioned looks to be cheap umpc’s. I do not think anyone thought they would be so popular. People would prefer to see large screen umpc’s if that sounds correct. I guess you could say these laptops are already aquirable if you are ready to pay the price. We are seeing slicker gaming laptops now and it looks this will keep on going. New ideas are seen every couple of months and I’m sure the next year already contains a lot of promise for us techies.

I would recommend these if you are in search of the best laptops.

The Prairie and Prosperity of Illinois

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

The Land of Lincoln sprawls over 56,400 square-miles primarily of prairie, but half of its population of 12 million is concentrated in the greater Chicago area. Let’s explore the five regions of downstate and then discover Chicagoland.

Southern

This region is home to the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, which is a 25-mile trail through the Shawnee National Forest that visits five wineries. They are Alto Vineyards, Owl Creek Vineyards, Winghill Vineyard, Von Jakob Vineyard and Pomona Winery. The newest winery is the new Blue Sky Vineyard in Makanda, a Tuscan-themed winery featuring a 360-degree mural in its tasting room. Many of the wineries stage special events during September, which is Illinois Wine Month.

Nearby Metropolis is the official adopted Home of Superman. Stop for a photo with the 15 foottall Superman statue and cross the street for the Super Museum, featuring Superman memorabilia and props. There is a Superman Celebration here each June, with superhero-themed entertainment and celebrity appearances.

Southwest

More than 1,000 eagles migrate to the Alton and Grafton areas to spend the winter on the bluffs along the Great River Road. Pere Marquette State Park offers eagle-watching programs from late December through February. The new National Great Rivers Museum in Alton tells the story of the Mississippi River through over 20 interactive, animated displays. Tours of the Melville Locks and Dam allow guests to view the river traffic from atop the eight-story dam. Nearby, the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Hartford tells the story of the famous journey that began in Illinois. Groups can explore a full-scale model of one of their keelboats, watch a film entitled At Journeys Edge and view a replica of Camp River Dubois.

Cahokia Mounds in Collinsville are the remains of an ancient Mississippian Indian culture that existed here from 700 to 1400 A.D. Sixty-eight of the original earthen mounds have been preserved, including the 100 foot-tall Monks Mound. Each August, artisans demonstrate fire starting, pottery making and flint knapping on Archaeology Day.

The National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville has twelve different devotional areas. The Lourdes Grotto is a replica of the religious site in France. A free guided trolley tour is available through the 200 acres of grounds. Each year from November to January, the shrine features carriage rides, caroling, a display of decorated trees and outdoor light sculptures that tell the Christmas story in an event called Way of Lights.

West

The Illinois River Road Scenic Byway, a natural preserve along the banks of the Illinois River, was recently designated a National Scenic Byway. The byway allows visitors to travel the routes of the French voyageurs and it parallels the Illinois River Country Nature Trail, a chain of over one hundred linked nature sites that offer outdoor recreation. Along the route is Dickson Mounds Museum in Lewiston that traces the 12,000-year history of Native Americans in the Illinois River Valley in one of the finest on-site archaeological museums in the country.

Bishop Hill is a historic country village that highlights its Swedish heritage through restored colony buildings, museums, crafts and antique shops and restaurants run by the descendants of the towns founders. The Carl Sandburg Home is in Galesburg, where you can view the Pulitzer Prize-winning author’s birthplace, tour the visitors center and visit the perennial garden where he is buried. Another famous American, lawman Wyatt Earp, was born in Monmouth. His four-room home features period furniture and memorabilia. Earp became famous for his gunfight at the OK Corral in Tombstone, Ariz.

The history of Moline is inextricably linked with John Deere, whose plow changed farming. The John Deere Pavilion shows vintage and modern Deere equipment, along with other agricultural exhibits.

Wildlife Prairie State Park in Peoria offers an 1800s pioneer farmstead, with one-room schoolhouse and log cabin. During its Frontier Days, native Illinois animals such as cougars, bison, black bears and others are on display.

When the Mormons fled upstate New York in the early 1840s, they settled in the small river town of Nauvoo. The Historic Nauvoo Visitors Center displays artifacts and offers a live musical about old Nauvoo during the summer. The Joseph Smith Historic Site Visitors Center tells the story of the movement in Nauvoo and of Smith, the groups first president. Horse-drawn carriage rides and guided walking tours are offered. Baxters Vineyards here dates from 1857, making it Illinois oldest winery. Next door is Nauvoo Glassworks, where visitors watch artisans craft art glass. Follow the river south to the East End Historic District in Quincy. National Geographic Magazine named it one of the ten most architecturally significant corners in the nation, where one can view homes spanning every period of design since the 1850s.

Homeschool Spanish – 3 Ways To Liven Up Your Lessons

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Homeschool Spanish! 3 simple keys to liven up the lessons
Are you interested in making the Spanish learning in your home more exciting?

If your kids are studying outside the home, do you feel they need a more lively approach to keep them interested?

Homeschool Spanish can be tough. Many levels to teach, boring and repetitive materials and no connection to the language all make for a tough going.

The thing is, as a Homeschooling parent, you’re used to making things come alive.

You bake a cake and make a math lesson out of it. You walk in the park,
discover plants and learn about science.

But fear not. I’m about to show you how you can add three tricks to your homeschool Spanish atmosphere that will get your creative juices flowing and help you liven up your lessons.

Key #1 – Bring Spanish to life in your home

Any child wants (and needs) to feel connected to what they’re learning. That’s why homeschooling is such a blessing. Those connections are real easy when you’re the one in charge.

Well, why not start to incorporate some common expressions into your daily routine and see how things go. Here a starter list of phrases you can use with your child.

- No me digas! – You’re kidding!
– Qué va! – No way!
– No quiero – I don’t want to (a biggie with the younger ones)
– Qué pasa aqu? – What’s going on here?

Naturally there are more but, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. One expression every couple of days will be enough to get them involved…and you too.

In fact, the whole family can start creating typical phrases that can be used day in and day and allow your homeschool Spanish experience to grow like a freshly watered plant.

Key #2 – Serve it up in ways your kids like it.
Most kids love music, TV or reading. So why not try to include a little
of each into your Spanish lessons.

For example, for the little ones, there are educational programs (ex. Dora The Explorer)
on TV that attempt to use Spanish in a fun and informative way.

If your children are in their teens, you can find Spanish music that’s similar to their
tastes. You can find any type of music online or ask in your local music store. Then,
once you have the music, you can use the lyrics to study the words,
the expressions or the tenses.

Reading is no different. You can find bilingual texts of Dr. Seuss’ series or
Clifford the Big Red Dog for the little ones and similar titles for the older kids.
Just go online at Google or check your local library.

Key #3 – Find a great idea and copy it
This is important because it saves you the most time and money.

If you’re the teacher and the material is a little…dry,
go out and look for resources that have innovative, “outside-the-box” approaches to learning. They don’t have to be language texts. The idea is to find an approach you like and copy it.

Go browse some local bookstores or libraries. Go surfing on the internet. If you like what you see, study it a bit and think of ways to use the same technique in your Spanish lessons.

Here’s an example: Vocabulary Cartoons is a wonderful book that uses mnemonics and visuals to memorize SAT words. Well, why not use the same technique to memorize Spanish words?

If you think you like the resource, make sure it has a guarantee (the longer the better) so you can try it at home.

This whole process doesn’t have to cost any money and will certainly save you time thinking up new ways to inject excitement into your homeschool Spanish lessons.

As a Homeschooling parent, you have options a public school teacher doesn’t have. Why not take advantage of them?

And remember, if your kids are learning outside the home, you can find something fun to use with them so that they maintain their interest through the year.

Jim Sarris, author of Comic Mnemonics, has created a resource for homeschool families that makes learning Spanish fun and easier using visuals and mnemonics. For free samples and video tutorial, visit http://www.learnspanishfaster.com/homeschoolspanish.html

Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Today there are different types of options available for hair removal. Hair removal may be needed in many body parts, such as face, neck, back, chest, bikini area, legs, and arms. One great method that was developed and has been in use for less than one decade is laser hair removal. Laser hair removal is one of the newest and most popular methods and makes hair removal permanent; for this reason its popularity is growing on a yearly basis, encountering more and more the favor of the public.

Laser hair removal entails using a laser beam that acts directly on the hair. It is not radiation, so it is safe and has not been known to cause cancer. It requires a few treatments in order to actually prevent hair growth again. The reason is that hair cycle happens every five to six weeks. Therefore at least four to six treatments are usually required in order to cause permanent hair removal. The laser beam causes instant hair death at the time of that the laser is applied. Most places that provide laser hair removal treatments are staffed with professionals that are familiar with this method of hair removal. Local skin irritation or skin sensitivity may result, and may require gentle care with the skin.
